Do you think we will bored in heaven? What will we be doing?
I think we’ve all seen too many of those cartoons where heaven amounts to floating in the clouds with nothing to do but play a harp. I admit that would be pretty boring. Sometimes heaven is more accurately described as being in church all the time—one eternal act of worship. Well, if you are bored enough to be reading this column during Mass, then perhaps the image of heaven as an eternal Mass might not give you much comfort.
No, we will not be bored in heaven. No way! St. Paul said, “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Cor 2:9) For one thing, we will see God face to face! How could that be boring? Further, the Catechism says, “Heaven is the ultimate end and fulfillment of the deepest human longings, the state of supreme, definitive happiness.” (CCC 1024)
It is really hard to speculate on what we will be doing. However, I would make this point that we will receive glorified, immortal bodies at the Resurrection, and that St. John said in Revelation that there will be a new heaven and a new earth. For these and other reasons, I think we will so do many of the things we like to do on earth such as eating, drinking, enjoying each other’s company, and whatever else is good here on earth. But far outshining all this is the personal relationship we will have with the Holy Trinity. Just imagine the happiest moments you’ve ever had on earth. They won’t compare to heaven!
